Antwerp, copper token of the Corporation des Brouetteurs (Barrowmen's Guild), dated 1546. Obv: St. Andrew standing with his cross, countermark P to right, SANCTVS ANDREAS. Rev: wheelbarrow below date 1546, GHEMAECKTˇ INTˇ IAERˇ VAN. DeBeer 190. Weight 3.45 grams, 24 mm. About VF. Barrowmen were laborers who moved things from place to place in wheelbarrows; they were an essential part of the construction boom that took place in early modern Europe. Antwerp in particular experienced an intense period of building and industrialization in the early 16th century. SOLD
