Mainz, 1793 5 sols, copper, seige coinage struck by the French Revolutionary forces defending the city against a German siege that lasted from April 14 to July 23. The city fell to the German Allied forces in July, but was ceded to the French in 1797. Obv: fasces within wreath, cap above, REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, L'AN 2E in exe. Rev: (rosette) 5 (rosette) / SOLS / (rosette), MONOYE DE SIEGE DE MAYENCE. KM #603. Weight 21.46 grams, about 31 mm. VF or better for the type. $120.
