Goslar, Civic Issue
Goslar, civic issue circa 1500, AR bauerngroschen. Obv: plumed helmet atop shield with eagle, MONETA NOVA GOSLARIEN. Rev: St. Simon and St. Jude, SANCTVS SIMON ET IVDAS. This coin, which had a value of 12 pfennigs, was struck from 1477 through the late 16th century with a design that changed in style but not in content over the period. The word bauerngroschen means farmer's groschen, a humorous commentary on the inelegant rendering of the two saints, who do look as if they're holding farm implements. Similar to Saurma 3960/2144, but a slightly later design. Weight 3.43 grams, 27 mm. About VF for the type. SOLD
